Even the littlest ones can tackle it with ease, and will surely be thrilled by the experience.
It's a short hike, but from its summit you can admire a 360-degree panorama that extends from the Trebbia Valley to the Portofino promontory, and on clear days you can even see the coast of Corsica and the Maritime Alps.
Mount Caucasus is one of the places of our childhood, and climbing to the summit is always a thrill. We start from the village of Barbagelata (1,115 meters), the highest village in the province of Genoa. Near the sign marking the entrance to the village, we take the path on the right marked Alta Via, which leads us to the war memorial. From here, a beautiful dirt road begins that passes through splendid beech forests. Along the very accessible route, we find places to stop for a simple meal.
We left Barbagelata at 12:30 p.m. and took advantage of the lovely coolness, given that the temperature in the city these days is above 38 degrees. We continued our hike and arrived at a saddle on the western slope of the Caucasus. The view was jaw-dropping, a sheer vista of the Fontanabuona Valley, Moconesi, Ferrada, Serra, and Cicagna. We continued a little further and, with a steep climb, climbed the western slope of the Caucasus. A sweeping view of the Ligurian Riviera appeared before us, reaching the grassy summit of Mount Caucasus, 1245 meters above sea level, where the small chapel, built in 1940 and dedicated to Our Lady of Peace, stands.

From the summit of Caucasus (1,245 meters), it's said you can enjoy the most expansive view of the Ligurian Riviera, and we can only confirm this: despite some clouds in the distance, the view stretches from the Apuan Alps to Ventimiglia, including the islands (today, however, the haze in the distance prevents us from seeing them). The panorama is equally sweeping inland, spanning from Antola to Lesima, from Alfeo to Ragola and Ramaceto. We stop to take a series of photos, because it's not every day you get to see a view like this.

A little below is the M.Caucaso refuge, built on the ruins of a barracks from the Second World War.
For many years, the refuge has been excellently managed by Patrizia and Maurizio, and thanks to their presence, the area has once again become a regular destination.

Here you can enjoy excellent dishes, the classic being a hearty plate of polenta with mushroom or sausage sauce, excellent ribs with potatoes, and the traditional jam tart baked in a wood-fired oven. A good red wine and a coffee are also included. All for €26, a great price for the quality of the food and the enchanting location.
The refuge also has 12 beds available with all services.
A nice, undemanding ride, suitable for all seasons
